Harrowing

Harrowing a field

Harrowing can scarify the surface of the soil allowing easier flow of nutrient to the grass roots, as well as removing dead grass or thatch, it allows air, nutrient, and water to the soil surface so that it reaches the root systems. The best time to carry out this operation is in the Spring, as the grass begins to grow. The exact timings obviously will be dictated by the temperature and soil conditions.

A further harrowing can be beneficial in the Autumn, to catch the late flush of grass and maximise Winter grazing.

EQUISERVE uses heavy 6 x 4 Chain Drag Harrows which can quickly breakdown rutted gateways, flatten out winter hoof marks (poaching), remove weed seedlings and moss. Harrowing also allows excess water to disperse from the soils surface, preventing puddles and stagnation in poached or old vegatation areas. All of this allows the grass to get off to the best start possible.
